  1. A<sc>bstract</sc>

    A search for pair production of squarks or gluinos decaying via sleptons or weak bosons is reported. The search targets a final state with exactly two leptons with same-sign electric charge or at least three leptons without any charge requirement. The analysed data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb1of proton-proton collisions collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Multiple signal regions are defined, targeting several SUSY simplified models yielding the desired final states. A single control region is used to constrain the normalisation of theWZ+ jets background. No significant excess of events over the Standard Model expectation is observed. The results are interpreted in the context of several supersymmetric models featuring R-parity conservation or R-parity violation, yielding exclusion limits surpassing those from previous searches. In models considering gluino (squark) pair production, gluino (squark) masses up to 2.2 (1.7) TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level.

  2. Abstract. Solute concentrations in stream water vary with discharge in patterns that record complex feedbacks between hydrologic and biogeochemical processes. In a comparison of three shale-underlain headwater catchments located in Pennsylvania, USA (the forested Shale Hills Critical Zone Observatory), and Wales, UK (the peatland-dominated Upper Hafren and forest-dominated Upper Hore catchments in the Plynlimon forest), dissimilar concentration–discharge (CQ) behaviors are best explained by contrasting landscape distributions of soil solution chemistry – especially dissolved organic carbon (DOC) – that have been established by patterns of vegetation and soil organic matter (SOM). Specifically, elements that are concentrated in organic-rich soils due to biotic cycling (Mn, Ca, K) or that form strong complexes with DOC (Fe, Al) are spatially heterogeneous in pore waters because organic matter is heterogeneously distributed across the catchments. These solutes exhibit non-chemostatic behavior in the streams, and solute concentrations either decrease (Shale Hills) or increase (Plynlimon) with increasing discharge. In contrast, solutes that are concentrated in soil minerals and form only weak complexes with DOC (Na, Mg, Si) are spatially homogeneous in pore waters across each catchment. These solutes are chemostatic in that their stream concentrations vary little with stream discharge, likely because these solutes are released quickly from exchange sites in the soils during rainfall events. Furthermore, concentration–discharge relationships of non-chemostatic solutes changed following tree harvest in the Upper Hore catchment in Plynlimon, while no changes were observed for chemostatic solutes, underscoring the role of vegetation in regulating the concentrations of certain elements in the stream. These results indicate that differences in the hydrologic connectivity of organic-rich soils to the stream drive differences in concentration behavior between catchments. As such, in catchments where SOM is dominantly in lowlands (e.g., Shale Hills), we infer that non-chemostatic elements associated with organic matter are released to the stream early during rainfall events, whereas in catchments where SOM is dominantly in uplands (e.g., Plynlimon), these non-chemostatic elements are released later during rainfall events. The distribution of SOM across the landscape is thus a key component for predictive models of solute transport in headwater catchments.

  4. This dataset includes rainfall, cloud, river and stream hydro-chemistry of the Plynlimon research catchments. The data is from weekly monitoring of stream hydrochemistry of the River Hafren (Severn) at both the Lower and Upper Hafren site from 1998, stream hydrochemistry of the River Hore at the Lower Hore site from 1983 and Upper Hore site from 1984 as well as rainfall hydrochemistry near the Carreg Wen meteorological site from 1983 and cloud hydrochemistry near the Carreg Wen meteorological site from 1990. Data for over 50 chemical determinands are presented alongside data for some in-situ measurements such as water temperature. Full descriptions of the analytical methods used for each determinand is included. The Plynlimon research catchments lie within the headwaters of the River Severn and the River Wye in the uplands of mid-Wales. Intensive and long-term monitoring within the catchments underpins a wealth of hydrological and hydro-chemical research; other linked datasets include river flow, meteorology and a variety of detailed spatial datasets representing the topography, soils and rivers of the catchments. Monitoring is funded by the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, and is ongoing since 1968. Originally designed to improve understanding of water use by coniferous forests, monitoring within the Plynlimon research catchments has subsequently developed into a multi-disciplinary project underpinning a wealth of hydrological research. The stream hydrochemistry dataset is a combination of chemical determinands and in-situ physical properties. Samples are taken on an approximately weekly basis and analysed in laboratories for approximately 50 chemical determinands. The laboratory analysis has been undertaken at different locations using different equipment during the years of monitoring represented within the dataset. Details of the analytical methods used for each determinand are included within the dataset. The information provided is presented as raw data which have not been modified to include "less than" values when the numbers are less than the lowest quotable value. This is done so as to allow the data to be used for research purposes including detailed statistical analysis where inclusion of less than values would be problematic. The data are thus "uncensored" for research purposes and include in places values that are negative due to analytical uncertainties and the extremely low concentrations of some of the determinands. The data are provided in good faith with the expectation that they will be used in a positive and constructive manner. It is up to the user to resolve which way to use and interpret the data and information on full methodologies and less than values is provided within the metadata files. We whole heartedly encourage the use of these data for research and educational purposes bearing in mind that it is uncensored data and that over the years research directions have evolved to reflect changing project and funding priorities while analytical methodologies have changed. The data provide a legacy from many years' research involving scientists, analysts and field workers who in many cases have now retired. While we have done our best to provide all the information possible, in many cases it will be not be possible to respond to detailed enquiries about the earlier parts of the record.

  5. A<sc>bstract</sc>

    A search for supersymmetry targeting the direct production of winos and higgsinos is conducted in final states with either two leptons (eorμ) with the same electric charge, or three leptons. The analysis uses 139 fb1ofppcollision data at$$ \sqrt{s} $$s= 13 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider. No significant excess over the Standard Model expectation is observed. Simplified and complete models with and withoutR-parity conservation are considered. In topologies with intermediate states including eitherWhorWZpairs, wino masses up to 525 GeV and 250 GeV are excluded, respectively, for a bino of vanishing mass. Higgsino masses smaller than 440 GeV are excluded in a naturalR-parity-violating model with bilinear terms. Upper limits on the production cross section of generic events beyond the Standard Model as low as 40 ab are obtained in signal regions optimised for these models and also for anR-parity-violating scenario with baryon-number-violating higgsino decays into top quarks and jets. The analysis significantly improves sensitivity to supersymmetric models and other processes beyond the Standard Model that may contribute to the considered final states.

  7. A<sc>bstract</sc>

    A search for dark matter produced in association with a Higgs boson in final states with two hadronically decayingτ-leptons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis uses 139 fb1of proton-proton collision data at$$ \sqrt{s} $$s= 13 TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider between 2015 and 2018. No evidence of physics beyond the Standard Model is found. The results are interpreted in terms of a 2HDM+amodel featuring two scalar Higgs doublets and a pseudoscalar singlet field. Exclusion limits on the parameters of the model in selected benchmark scenarios are derived at 95% confidence level. Model-independent limits are also set on the visible cross-section for processes beyond the Standard Model producing missing transverse momentum in association with a Higgs boson decaying intoτ-leptons.

  9. Abstract

    A search for pair-produced vector-like quarks using events with exactly one lepton (eor$$\mu $$μ), at least four jets including at least oneb-tagged jet, and large missing transverse momentum is presented. Data from proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of$$\sqrt{s}=$$s=13 $$\text {TeV}$$TeV, recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC from 2015 to 2018 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb$$^{-1}$$-1, are analysed. Vector-like partnersTandBof the top and bottom quarks are considered, as is a vector-likeXwith charge$$+5/3$$+5/3, assuming their decay into aW,Z, or Higgs boson and a third-generation quark. No significant deviations from the Standard Model expectation are observed. Upper limits on the production cross-section ofTandBquark pairs as a function of their mass are derived for various decay branching ratio scenarios. The strongest lower limits on the masses are 1.59 $$\text {TeV}$$TeVassuming mass-degenerate vector-like quarks and branching ratios corresponding to the weak-isospin doublet model, and 1.47 $$\text {TeV}$$TeV(1.46 $$\text {TeV}$$TeV) for exclusive$$T \rightarrow Zt$$TZt($$B/X \rightarrow Wt$$B/XWt) decays. In addition, lower limits on theTandBquark masses are derived for all possible branching ratios.

  10. A<sc>bstract</sc>

    This paper describes a search for the single production of an up-type vector-like quark (T) decaying asTHtorTZt. The search utilises a dataset ofppcollisions at$$ \sqrt{s} $$s= 13 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector during the 2015–2018 data-taking period of the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb1. Data are analysed in final states containing a single lepton with multiple jets andb-jets. The presence of boosted heavy resonances in the event is exploited to discriminate the signal from the Standard Model background. No significant excess above the Standard Model expectation is observed, and 95% CL upper limits are set on the production cross section ofTquarks in different decay channels. The results are interpreted in several benchmark scenarios to set limits on the mass and universal coupling strength (κ) of the vector-like quark. For singletTquarks,κvalues above 0.53 are excluded for all masses below 2.3 TeV. At a mass of 1.6 TeV,κvalues as low as 0.35 are excluded. ForTquarks in the doublet scenario, where the production cross section is much lower,κvalues above 0.72 are excluded for all masses below 1.7 TeV, and this exclusion is extended toκabove 0.55 for low masses around 1.0 TeV.
